OPENING NIGHT: JULY 12, 2024
at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts

2 Pianos 4 Hands was originally produced in April 1996,  by the Tarragon Theatre, Toronto, in association with Talking Fingers Inc.  and produced across North America and in London, UK by Mirvish Productions.

2 Pianos 4 Hands is produced by permission of the Playwrights and Marquis Entertainment / Marquis Literary (Colin Rivers) www.MQlit.ca

A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Reflecting back on Northlight’s varied productions over the last several decades, we know how much you appreciated the thrilling musical talents on display in shows like Marie and Rosetta, The Porch on Windy Hill, Ella, and more. And as we inch closer to our goal of returning to Evanston and our future new home, I thought it would be interesting — and certainly entertaining — to revisit a musical piece that our audience overwhelmingly enjoyed in the past.

In my early years as Artistic Director, we produced 2 Pianos 4 Hands in the 800-seat Center Theatre. Both entertaining and musically challenging, 2P4H is a wonderful play by astonishing actor/musicians, Richard Greenblatt and Ted Dykstra, portrayed tonight by Adam La Salle and Mathew McGloin. They share their artistry with us in a perfect summertime offering that honors the success of our past and celebrates it with a fresh new production. It’s a satisfying end to a fantastic season here at Northlight, and a wonderful reminder of why you choose Northlight for your live theatre experience. Thanks for an amazing season and your continued loyalty.

BJ Jones

A NOTE FROM THE  DIRECTOR

In the last show I directed at Northlight, Songs for Nobodies, one of the “nobodies” gets a little philosophical and says:

“In this country, people are always talkin’ about dreams. You can be your dream. You can have your dream. You can live the dream….. And then one day they wake up to the fact that not very many people live a dream. And that the best advice is not: Follow Your Dream. It’s Adjust Your Dream. When we’re little children and we want to be somethin’, someone should shake us and look into our eyes and say: Lower Your Expectations.”

It’s an awful feeling to think that you can’t have your dream, or that you’ve wasted your talent, or maybe (worse yet) wasted your time chasing your dream because you ultimately didn’t have the talent. Finding yourself like Mama Rose at the end of Gypsy saying, “If I could’ve been, I would’ve been.”

I don’t know ANYTHING about this. Everything is perfect in my life. This is exactly where I thought I’d always be. Please read the sarcasm here. I am a lucky guy with a fantastic career, but I’d be lying if I said it was all dreams come true all the time.

I would imagine many of you had something in your life that had to go from a passion to a hobby. Maybe you realized that professional sports, or stand-up comedy, or classical music just wasn’t going to pay the bills. It’s depressing-stuff to talk about: adjusting your dream. But I think the key is: adjusting a dream, never giving up on it. Be the best you can be today and keep working to be better – in every aspect of your life.  Ted and Richard are the two best pianists in their neighborhood – not the world.  That’s inspiring. So maybe, find your way back to that basketball court, or chess board, or open mic, or piano. Or find a new dream! Who knows, maybe I’ll start tap-dance lessons or open a bakery one day? Time spent with your dreams and your passion, I think, is never time wasted.
