Tor: Wow, what a year it’s been at Northlight! I honestly feel like this community has changed me for the better.
Northlight: What was one stand-out moment from your time at Northlight?
Tor: A stand-out moment for me? It’s hard to pick just one, but working on Echoes of Evanston with Evanston Rules was a huge highlight. There was something so deeply moving about bringing those stories to life and knowing that theatre really can be a bridge that connects communities. Plus, anytime I get to work on a project that leaves people teary-eyed (in a good way!), it’s a win.
Northlight: In what ways do you feel you’ve grown as an artist in the last year?
Tor: I’ve definitely grown as an artist—and not just in terms of stress-eating snacks during rehearsals! This year has taught me to trust myself more as a director. I’ve become more confident in my vision and more open to the wild, beautiful process of collaboration. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.
Northlight: How has your connection with Chicago theatre deepened?
Tor: My connection to Chicago theatre has deepened beyond what I could’ve imagined. This city is full of some of the most passionate and generous artists I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Chicago theatre isn’t just a scene—it’s a movement of people dedicated to making art that matters. I’m so proud to be part of that.
A big shout-out to BJ and Tim—you’ve both been so incredibly generous and supportive. You’ve opened doors for me that I didn’t even know were there! And working with Georgette was an absolute joy. She has such a gift for making every moment on stage matter. Watching her work was like getting a masterclass in how to elevate storytelling.
And to everyone I’ve befriended here—there are so many of you! I could write a novel with all the names, but instead, I’ll just say this: Northlight is filled with some of the most talented, kind-hearted, and generous people I’ve ever met. You all have a special place in my heart, and I’m walking away with lifelong friendships.
Northlight will always be a part of me, and I hope to be back one day—hopefully directing a show in the new building! Until then, I’ll be cheering you all on and staying connected to this amazing theatre family.
Thank you for making this year unforgettable.
