Speak Up Summit 2023

We are thrilled to extend our heartfelt gratitude and share the resounding success of the recent Speak Up Summit! This annual event brought together students from our Speak Up residency schools, creating a powerful platform to celebrate young artists and amplify the issues and communities that matter to them.

The Speak Up Summit immersed attendees in a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere where creativity, self-expression, and social engagement took center stage. The event showcased an incredible live performance by our teaching artists, captivating workshops, and invaluable opportunities for students to connect with like-minded peers across Chicagoland.

Throughout the Summit, students explored the Speak Up themes of identity, community, and arts activism. We were honored to witness the passion, talent, and dedication of each young artist as they fearlessly shared their stories and perspectives.

We would like to express our deepest appreciation to all the students, teachers, artists, and supporters who contributed to the overwhelming success of the Speak Up Summit. Your unwavering dedication, creativity, and commitment to positive change have left an indelible mark on our community.

WHAT TEACHERS HAD TO SAY:

“Northlight has always offered activities that keep my students engaged, especially acting.  The staff is flexible and the staff brings new experiences for our students to use their voice.”

–      Ms. Thomas, Marcus Garvey

“My students really enjoyed the workshop!! It was all they talked about on the bus ride to the school. The most impactful part of the Summit was that my students really got to know each other on another level.  It was really cool to see them encouraging each other when they showed their presentations in the summit.”

–      Ms. Guidry, Marcus Garvey

“I enjoyed it and so did my students. It was nice to have Mr. Hamilton with us because he has been working with them this year.”

–      Ms. Feit, Julian High School
