Speak Up
Grades 6-12
Speak Up brings a custom-designed theatre for social change residency to your school. This program brings current events into the classroom by facilitating a process where students devise an original performance on topical issues. Students combine factual information with their own stories to address issues that have a problematic impact on our communities. Northlight’s goal is to increase a student’s participation in the arts by making theatre accessible while building creativity, reflection, confidence, and collaboration skills.
PRE-RESIDENCY
Planning meeting between classroom teacher, Northlight Education Manager, and Teaching Artist.
RESIDENCY
Sessions scheduled per residency can be customizable, ranging between 8-24 sessions. Each residency is structured to first allow students to explore community and current events, then laying a foundation of skill-based learning in theatre and drama. Next students move into a process of making their own theatrical production, culminating with a presentation for peers, administrators, and students, and capped off with action items to move forward, reflect, and celebrate.
VIRTUAL OPTION
Northlight now offers our Speak Up program virtually. With live collaboration with our teaching artists through Google Meets or Zoom, we are committed to helping students utilize arts practices to build strong communities.
