The curtain rises as Evanston’s $32.2 million Northlight Theatre set to open: ‘We’re excited to be home’

Sunlight pours in through floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the exposed steel, warm wood accents and sweeping grand staircase that anchors the lobby of the brand new Northlight Theatre in Evanston.

Just beyond the entrance, an intimate bar with leather lounge chairs invite patrons to gather before the house lights dim or linger during intermission to swap reactions about their favorite moments of the performance.

After nearly 30 years in Skokie, the acclaimed Northlight Theatre has returned to Evanston, its original home, welcoming theater lovers and local residents alike with a $32.2 million state-of-the-art performance space at 1012 Church Street.

You can’t miss Evanston’s new $32 million Northlight Theatre. Situated near both CTA and Metra train stations, with its two-story glass walls facing outward, the building is the result of concerted efforts to integrate the theater company into the neighborhood and create an arts anchor.

Northlight Theatre to Open Its First Permanent Home in Chicago

After more than five decades as an itinerant and resident company in Chicago’s northern suburbs, Northlight Theatre will open its first-ever permanent home in downtown Evanston this September. The two-story facility, located within walking distance of Northwestern University and multiple public transit options, features a 285-seat theater, a bar/café, lounge, and rehearsal and event spaces. Designed by Chicago-based architectural firm Eckenhoff Saunders with construction by Bulley & Andrews, the building blends an elegant modern look with a vintage industrial style.

See inside Northlight’s new Evanston home

Evanston Now

After just over a year of construction, Northlight Theatre’s new home along Church Street in downtown Evanston will open this fall, setting the stage for the theater’s return to its original home after decades away.

Since 2013, Northlight has been eyeing a return to Evanston, settling on its new home at 1012 Church St. in 2021 and breaking ground on the 24,000-square-foot venue last March.
